Updated at 4:27 p.m. ETSPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Illinois abolished the death penalty Wednesday, more than a decade after the state imposed a moratorium on executions out of concern that innocent p stanley becher eople could be put to death by a justice system that had wrongly condemned 13 men.Gov. Pat Quinn also commuted the sentences of all 15 inmates remaining on death row. They will now serve life in prison with no hope of parole. State lawmakers voted in January to abandon capital punishment, and Quinn spent two months reflecting on the issue, speaking with prosecutors, crime victims families, death penalty opponents and religious leaders. He called it the most difficult decision he has made as governor. We have found over and over again: Mistakes have been made. Innocent people have been freed. It s not possible to create a perfect, mistake-free death penalty system, Quinn said after signing the legislation. Illin stanley water bottle ois will join 15 other states that have done away with executions. The executive director of a national group that studies capital punishment said Illinois move sets it apart from other states that have eliminated the death penalty because many of those places rarely used it. Illinois stands out because it was a state that used it, reconsidered it and now rejected it, said Richard Dieter, of the Death Penalty Information Center, in Washington.Prosecutors and some victims families had urged Quinn to stanley canada veto the measure. The Nzmz Jay Pharoah, Taran Killam to exit Saturday Night Live
A 14-year-old is being tried in Harris County, Texas near Houston foraggravated sexual assault of a childfor having sex with his 12-year-old girlfriend, the Houston Chronicle reported. The teen was in the seventh grade at the time he had sex with with the sixth-grade student. If found guilty, the teen would be labeled as a sex offender. He had consensual sex with his little girlfriend and he loved her. They were boyfriend-girlfriend, the teen s mother told the Chronicle.Texas has what is known as a Romeo and Juliet law, which allows for someone to have consensual sex with someone within three years of age. That means a 17-year-old would legally be allowed to have sex with a 14-year-old, despite the 14-year-old being younger than the legal age of consent. However, the law does not apply when the victim is under the age of 14. In Texas, the minimum age of criminal responsibilityis 10, while the age of consent in the state is 17. The idea that a 14-year-old who has sex with a person just a little bit younger than him or her would be treated as the worst of the worst in our society and placed on the sex offender registry is really sick, the teen s attorney, Joseph Gutheinz, told the Chronicle. If he has sex w adidas originals samba ith someone who is younger by just days but is still 13 years old, he could be charged with one of the most serious offenses we have. It just blows my mind.
